Most handguns are bought for protection, however, many gun owners find it difficult to lock up their firearms in case of an emergency. Existing box-style safes do not allow immediate access - no matter how fast they claim to be. Vara Safety’s Reach is an entirely new approach. As a holster-safe, the Reach is an “open” style concept that gives gun owners BOTH immediate access and storage security. The Reach uses biometric technology in conjunction with a versatile mechanical platform that allows for compatibility with most firearms. We will later expand to include smart data, communication, and analytics for law enforcement and military applications.

Position Overview

Vara Safety is accepting applications for a full-time mechanical engineer/manufacturing position. Coop and internship positions are also available. The position has core responsibilities of designing and prototyping new products and making improvements to existing firearms safety products. Additional responsibilities will include the design and fabrication of physical systems including production, demonstration, and test equipment. The position is also involved in the certification process (UL, CE, etc.) as required by individual project specifications. A large focus is on producing production-ready designs and taking these designs through the production process (both in-house and with external manufacturers).

A well-qualified candidate should be capable of moving from concept to pre-manufacturing prototype while managing documentation, testing, schedules, and cost projections of their respective projects and activities.

Responsibilities Overview

  • Create 2D and 3D models, detailed drawings, BOMs, and design documentation of machined metal, plastics, and other hardware parts.

  • Fabricate or source model prototypes, test jigs, and pre-production models.

  • Source and assess off-shore or domestic manufacturing partners to aid in product design efforts.

  • Develop and execute well-rounded test plans to validate new products and revised designs.

  • Identify and source materials, components sub-assemblies, and manufacturing methods

  • Design and evaluation of products, parts, or processes for cost efficiency and reliability.

  • Troubleshooting and root cause failure analysis for product enhancement and ongoing production

  • Recommend design and/or material improvements for existing products.

  • Participate in pilot and pre-production runs for product launches.

  • Incorporate design for manufacturability, Lean concepts, and Six Sigma tools to ensure high-quality product design and innovation.

Candidate Attributes

  • Demonstrate from hands-on experience, a high level of execution and functionality in their core discipline. Portfolios of engineering/project work or business initiatives are highly encouraged. 

  • Have 2-4 years’ experience in product design/manufacturing

  • Have experience with the fabrication/manufacturing of metal components. Injection molding experience is also desirable.

  • 2D and 3D CAD experience (We use Autodesk’s software suite, but experience with any modern CAD system is acceptable)

  • Be willing to provide extraordinary talent, dedication, and flexibility above and beyond a typical corporate work environment.

  • Experience with high volume and low volume, high mix manufacturing

  • Experience with CNC machining (CAM and machine operation)
